How I Updated My Skincare Routine for My 30’s

I would like to think that the good habits we create while young will only prove to be successful in the future, which is why I rely on a skincare routine. Self-care, in general, is all about preservation. It’s about meeting your body where it is, catering to its current needs, and preparing for the inevitable changes. Now, the subtle change in my skincare routine is to protect and nourish my skin as I enter my 30s. Let’s face it, the same routine I had at 20 is no longer applicable.

The reason for this is simple. As we grow older, our cell regeneration slows due to biological and environmental factors. As we age, collagen decreases, hormonal shifts occur, and fluctuations in estrogen levels are the main factors contributing to changes in the elasticity and health of our skin. We begin to notice fine lines and wrinkles, adult acne, and pigmentation. In my 20s, I could get away with a simple cleanser and moisturizer, and it was enough for my skin to look fresh and bouncy. Now, I really focus on deep hydration and preventative measures.

My routine is still quite simple, but I think it’s effective. A little disclaimer: what might work for me may not work for your skin type. If you have serious dermatological issues you want to sort out, I highly recommend speaking with a dermatologist.

So let’s get into it! No gatekeeping!

MORNING ROUTINE

I’ve had the same morning routine for the past five or more years. I think this is a routine that can work for all age ranges, and I do not plan to change it any time soon.

  1. Before any makeup, I start by rinsing my face with warm water. I do not use a cleanser in the morning. This is just a preference, but if you prefer to, use a gentle cleanser.
  2. My next step is Vitamin C serum. I believe using a Vitamin C serum is just as important as using SPF daily. Vitamin C helps with hyperpigmentation, brightens skin, protects skin from UV radiation, and can improve the appearance of fine lines (source).
  3. I use a light daily moisturizer, with Olay as my holy grail.
  4. Last step is an SPF. Right now I like this one from Kiehl’s and this mineral one from One Skin.

I repeat these steps daily, and it works well under makeup.

EVENING ROUTINE

This is where I have begun to make some changes to my routine. I no longer cleanse and moisturize solely. I am now intentional with the products I use and why. I have introduced glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and tretinoin into my routine more regularly.

Glycolic acid is effective for cellular turnover through exfoliating the skin and breaking down dead skin cells. It helps stimulate collagen production, improves skin tone and texture, and can aid the absorption of hyaluronic acid (source).

Hyaluronic acid is known for deep hydration, helping keep skin plump and firm, which is important for the elasticity of the skin.

Tretinoin is a retinoid commonly prescribed to treat acne, but also has benefits such as reducing the appearance of wrinkles and aiding in keeping pores clear (source). It is available in multiple strengths, and it is best to gradually incorporate it into your evening routine. At this time, I use a .025% strength three times per week. I recommend you talk with your dermatologist if you want to use tretinoin to determine the right strength for you.

Based on the products I am using, my goal is to target cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, minimize acne, and keep my skin hydrated and youthful-looking.

My evening routine goes as follows:

I always cleanse my face at night using this glycolic acid cleanser, and if needed, I use this micellar makeup remover to remove any residue.

Sunday: Tretinoin

Monday: Glycolic acid toner + Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream

Tuesday: Tretinoin

Wednesday: One Skin Eye Cream + One Skin Facial Moisturizer

Thursday: Tretinoin

Friday: Glycolic acid toner + Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream

Saturday: One Skin Eye Cream + One Skin Facial Moisturizer

One Skin is a science-backed brand I started using 6 months ago. Their patented formula targets cellular senescence to promote healthier skin cells.

BEAUTY TREATMENTS

The only beauty treatment I can vouch for is facials. My favorite treatment is the HydraFacial, a non-invasive medical-grade procedure that focuses on deep cleansing, extractions, and hydration. I go to a dermatology office to have this service done by a nurse esthetician.

My favorite component of this treatment is the hyaluronic acid infusion which can help minimize and prevent fine lines over time.

The ideal frequency of this treatment is once a month, but for now I go at least 2-3x per year.

Lastly, I dermaplane roughly every 2-3 weeks. To remove the peach fuzz on my face, I was waxing for a while, but no matter what type of wax they used, I would break out really badly, so I found dermaplaning as an alternative but with more benefits.

Dermaplaning uses a blade to gently remove facial hair and exfoliate the skin. It leaves the skin feeling smooth and allows for a smoother makeup application. I apply Rose Hip Seed oil first before dermaplaning.

Stepping into a new decade of skincare isn’t about chasing perfection or reversing time—it’s about honoring the skin you’re in today while giving it the support it needs for the future. I’d love to know: how has your own skincare philosophy evolved, or what’s the one product you refuse to live without?
