When it comes to shopping, I have learnt a few tricks that has helped me save some money and at the same time get the items that I love.
Need v. Want
This is a big one, there are times when you are shopping and you see something that you want but not necessarily need. I have been so guilty of this one! Here are four questions that I run through my mind before making a final decision to purchase.
- Do I have something like this item?
- Is it worth the price?
- Does it go with what I have in my closet?
- Do I need it or want it? There has been times where I bought something that I thought I needed (more like wanted!!) and then ended up not wearing it 🙁
Create a Budget
No matter what your monetary position may be, it is good to create a budget. This allows you to have to flexibility to treat yourself without feeling guilty for spending money that you were saving. It also creates boundaries and structured spending. If you know you are on a budget, while shopping it forces you to stay within budget. I have been there where I have gone over budget and felt so guilty doing so (not a good feeling).
At times, there may be an item that I love but I can’t justify spending the amount that it is priced, so I would wait until it goes on sale. There are some exclusions such as designer pieces, but, even for designer you can shop consignment such as the RealReal or others of the same concept. Some of the best times to shop is when major stores has their sales such as Nordstrom (Anniversary Sale starts July 13), ShopBop (various sales), or Net-A-Porter (For more luxurious items, they have their final sale going on NOW!).
I hope these tips are helpful for you when it comes to becoming a smart shopper.
